HARTFORD—On Thursday, State Representative David A. Scribner (R-107) was applauded and honored by the Connecticut School Transportation Association (COSTA) for his tireless efforts to improve the safety of school transportation.
Rep. Scribner joined COSTA for their annual Board of Directors meeting, and spoke before the dozens of school administrators, transportation business leaders and public safety advocates who applauded his legislative accomplishments as Ranking Member of the Transportation Committee.
“As a legislator and a father, ensuring that students are transported under the safest conditions possible is a top priority. I am proud to have played a role in crafting legislation aimed at preventing child harm and improving the safety infrastructure of school transportation.” Rep. Scribner said.
In presenting the citation, Jean Cronin, COSTA’s government relations liaison, called Rep. Scribner “composed, helpful, caring, and thoughtful” and noted that he “asks all the appropriate questions” in a time of need.
Rep. Scribner added, “I am humbled by this recognition, and I am committed to continuing my work to enhance the safety of children in transit during the course of the school day.”
Some of the accomplishments that COSTA leadership identified when recognizing Rep. Scribner includes legislation:
◦ Offering sales tax incentives for schools that purchase school buses with seat belts
◦ Assisting the timely backlogging of criminal background checks for bus drivers
◦ Streamlining the fingerprinting process for school bus drivers
◦
COSTA is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization of pupil transportation carriers in Connecticut, responsible for transporting nearly 500,000 children to and from school daily. COSTA’s mission is to promote and foster the highest degree of safety in the transportation of school children. It is the leading organization in the state dedicated to improving safety for Connecticut children riding school buses.
Rep. Scribner serves as Ranking Member of the Transportation and Transportation Bonding Committees. He has previously been appointed by the Speaker of the House to the nationwide Transportation Committee of the National Council of State Legislators. In 2008 he was named Legislator of the Year by the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association for his many successful leadership efforts to improve the safety of our roads and highways. He is largely credited with annually defeating proposed legislation to re-implement highway tolls in the state.
